The site is one of the last buildable oceanfront parcels east of the Devon Yacht Club, and was held for seventeen years by a single family before this build. The brief from the architects' first sketch was simple: don't sit on the dune, sit with it. The house follows the natural ridge for 140 feet, low and long, with the primary living volume cantilevered seven feet over the seaward face of the dune so the planting beneath is left undisturbed.
The cladding is salt-cured Atlantic white cedar laid in a board-and-batten of two widths, designed to silver unevenly. Three glass volumes are pulled from the long bar — a kitchen, a primary suite, and a sunken sitting room — each with full-height sliding walls that retract entirely into the cedar frame. A 60-foot lap pool runs parallel to the house on the leeward side, lined in dark green slate so it reads, from the dune, as a continuation of the planting.
The interior is the work of Athena Calderone: lime-plastered walls in driftwood-grey, ash floorboards laid wide, a single 18-foot oak table by BDDW in the dining volume. Six acres, beach rights, unobstructed Atlantic.
